The fishing is limited above Mt White Bridge but there are large brown trout in the gorge and upper reaches, where the river is more stable fishing. Only a handful of casts went by when for the second time this evening I had another battle on my hands. The major tributary of note is the Waipare Stream. Kaiapoi Lakes, located 2 kilometres north of Kaiapoi’s town centre, is a significant site for coarse fishing, being a Discrete Coarse Fishery established by North Canterbury Fish and Game Council. Fish lie very close to the bottom of the river and so it is necessary to get lures down deep and fish them along the bottom to entice a strike. In the Waimakariri, spinning is most effective when you are in pursuit of salmon.
The Waimakariri is a cold spring fed stream that remains clear except after the heaviest rain. Anglers should beware that the current is deceptively strong and caution is needed to avoid a cold dunking. Downstream from the SH5 bridge, an esplanade reserve extends along both banks for approximately 2kms. Salmon fishing can be notoriously fickle sport. Use Tasmanian Devil or Black Toby. A permit is required for vehicle access to the Ashley River mouth during the whitebaiting season mid August to end of November. While undeniably, there is an element of luck involved with catching one, the flip side of this is that everyone is in with a chance. Mid February to the end of March are the best month. There can be a lot of weed in the stream which provides good cover and a good source of food for the huge fish population. The Awimak Stream is spring fed and rises in the hills north east of the township of Putaruru.
